Bouldercombe Tennis
Club
Anyone for tennis?
Tennis has been played in Bouldercombe since
the 1930's or there abouts. At first the
courts were up at the Recreation Reserve and
then players moved to the tennis court at the
Bouldercombe State School and the private
tennis court in Sunray Avenue at Benham's
place.
The most important seat on the
court
Sunday tennis was played on the court at
Benham's for many years and in the
1970's the ladies of the district started
playing at the ant bed court at the school. In
those days we pushed the pram to the court,
swept and rolled the court and then filled up
the line marker with lime and over the lines we
went. Then the net got untangled and put up and
we were ready to hit the tennis ball.
"The Pavilion"
People came from Gracemere, Mt Morgan and
Rockhampton to join in our tennis - we even
allowed the men to play if they weren't at
work. I guess you could call it also Playgroup
as we had quite a large number of little
children and babies with us.
The Go-Go Team from Gogango
Brian, Kevin, Mark and Andrew
With a government grant and lots of paper work
we got our old ant bed updated to bitumen and
lights on. As tennis gained in popularity
it was decided to go for another grant (and
lots of paper work) and get a double court laid
with lights. This was in the early 1990's
and we have run continuous night fixtures since
then.
Some seasons we have had up to 12 teams
playing with players from Gracemere, Kabra,
Gogango, Rockhampton and Mt Morgan joining the
locals.
The Gracemere Aces
Di, Ron, Ian and Graham
Saturday afternoon tennis was also played with
5 teams battling it out for the trophy. Sadly
though, through lack of numbers we don't
play on Saturdays now.
The Puffing Billies and The
Wackers
Juanita, Brett, Taylor and Greer are the
Puffing Billies while
Allison, Colleen, Jo and Noell are the
Wackers
Presently we have 7 teams playing on Monday,
Tuesday and Thursday nights and if you are
looking for a game of night tennis - for $4
we can accommodate you.
We start at 7:00pm,
with 2 courts and 4 sets each, we finish,
depending on the games, around 9:30pm.
Please ring Allison Close on 49 340 157 for
